Since the drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, approximately five million women have taken the particular form of birth control.

The FDA has received more than twenty reports of serious blood clots and other severe side effects linked to the use of Ortho Evra. Also, a report released by the Associated Press earlier this year stated that female patients who use the patch are at a risk for death and blood clots three times higher than women who take birth control pills.
