On November 10, 2005 a warning was released from Ortho McNeil, the makers of the Ortho Evra birth control patch, regarding health concerns related to the popular birth control. The warning stated that the birth control patch places women at an elevated risk for blood clots, as well as other dangerous side effects, as the result of the increased doses of hormones that the patch has. Women are exposed to approximately 60% more estrogen than they would receive from the average birth control pill as a result of the patch allowing the hormones to travel through the bloodstream differently than other forms of birth control.

At least 17 American women have died as the result of using Ortho Evra and many more have suffered serious side effects, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms, blood clots, strokes and heart attacks.

Ongoing concerns about the patch prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve additional changes in January 2008 to the Ortho Evra  label. The updated label includes the results of a new epidemiology study that found users of the birth control patch were at higher risk of developing serious blood clots, also known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), than women using birth control pills. VTE can lead to pulmonary embolism.

Ortho Evra is birth control in the form of a patch, which once placed on a women's skin needs to be changed only once per week, rather than other forms of contraceptives, such as the pill, which must be taken daily. Since the drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, approximately five million women have taken the particular form of birth control.

The FDA has received more than 20 reports of serious blood clots and other severe side effects linked to the use of Ortho Evra. Also, a report released by the Associated Press stated that female patients who use the patch are at a risk for death and blood clots three times higher than women who take birth control pills.
